One of the first lessons I learned when I began speculating was from an old pro who said, "Mike, only buy companies any fool can run…because eventually one will." Speculator’s need a good stupid meter, because being successful in speculation really boils down to identifying stupid (stupid= doing things that prevent you from reaching your goals) and avoiding it. You can have a great company, great products, above average R&D, a talent pool as deep as Lake Baykal but if there’s an outbreak of stupid in management the disease will spread faster than a pregnancy rumor at an all girl’s school. Stupid seems to be something that humans do exceptionally well as a group activity. Things that, individually a person would never consider, suddenly gain acceptance when "they" (the majestic plural) think it’s a good idea.
Stupid is a chronic human disease with which we all struggle. Success requires advanced planning…unfortunately so does failure. To the latter belong those intrepid souls who have eagerly embraced their stupid to the point that in their daily experience now they "feel the full power of the stupid-side." They strive to exhibit their powers by devastating practically anything they become associated with.
